Over the years, Lake Anna has evolved into a premier destination for dedicated anglers, as well as casual family outings, offering diverse fishing opportunities throughout the year.
What to Fish For
Anglers at Lake Anna often pursue three primary species: crappie, largemouth bass, and striped bass. The lake’s ecosystem supports healthy populations of these fish, providing ample opportunities for both novice and experienced fishermen to enjoy a fruitful day on the water.
The Lake Anna Grand Slam
In 2014 a fourth species of fish was added to Lake Anna – the wiper. A wiper is slang terms we use for a hybrid fish that is a cross between a striper with a white bass, and they have been thriving in the lake ever since they were added. Wipers can grow to more than 10 pounds and while a 15-pounder has not been caught yet, the expectation is that one will be soon. With the addition of the wiper, along with the crappie, largemouth bass and striped bass, you can go for the LAKE ANNA GRAND SLAM by catching all four species in one outing.
The Super Slam
Lake Anna has recently added a FIFTH species – the Saugeye. With the addition of this new fish, the Lake Anna Super Slam was created. To date, no one has successfully caught all five species in a single outing. So, you could be the first!
Tis The Season – Even in Winter
While many lakes see a decline in fishing activity during the colder months, Lake Anna remains active. The warm water discharge from the plant maintains stable temperatures, creating ideal conditions for the striped bass and the wipers. These fish often congregate in deeper waters during winter, making them accessible targets for dedicated anglers.
The Best Ways to Fish Lake Anna
Successful fishing at Lake Anna requires adapting to seasonal behaviors of the target species. In summer, you’ll want to focus on early and late hours, then deep water fish in the afternoon as the sun heats the lake. You’ll also have better luck using live bait. In winter, techniques such as trolling, casting, and jigging are effective for catching the striped bass and the wipers. Utilizing fish finders to locate schools of baitfish can significantly increase success rates. Topwater lures can also provide thrilling strikes, especially during cooler periods.
