Green Springs National Historic District

The founding fathers of America envisioned a nation of farmers, not the least of which was James Madison, whose farm lies at the beginning of the Green Springs Loop. With such a long and rich history, Virginia unsurprisingly hosts some of the oldest farms in the nation. Several of these can be seen in the Green Springs National Historic District interspersed by numerous woodlots and crossed by several streams. This area is great for wildlife such as short-eared owls, rusty blackbirds and horned larks. Along this loop is Lake Anna, the largest waterbody in the central Virginia Piedmont.

Louisa Town Park

Nature/Walking

Hidden just outside of downtown, the Louisa Town Park stretches across six acres of open fields flanked by wooded creek beds, which are interspersed by a few over-arching trees. This is a great spot to enjoy a picnic or short walk in the fresh air. As you walk along the creek, listen for Carolina wrens and white-eyed vireos scolding from the underbrush and northern cardinals and their large family of fledglings chipping insecurely from overhead. Once you reach the open lawn, watch for foraging American robins, northern mockingbirds and chipping sparrows.

Small Country Campground

Walking and Cycling Trail

Great for walkers and bicyclers, they pass through some of the beautiful hardwoods of Virginia. Virginia byways are some of the prettiest roads in the nation. Bicyclists love traveling these country roads. Two pass very close to the campground and running groups often use Small Country as a stop-over point as well. These drives are particularly beautiful with the autumn leaves.
