A Guide to Primitive Camping and Outdoor Adventure in Virginia
In a world of crowded campgrounds, reservation systems, and packed schedules, Trevilian Station Battlefield offers something increasingly rare: a simple, unplugged camping experience.
Located in Louisa County, Virginia, the battlefield welcomes visitors for primitive camping, stargazing, hiking, and horseback riding on one of the state’s most significant Civil War landscapes. This unique camping experience is available with no reservations, booking process, or camping fees required. Visitors simply arrive prepared, set up, and pack up respectfully, and of course – enjoy the experience!
A Different Kind of Overnight Stay
The camping area is located adjacent to the Oakland Road trailhead parking area with an acre of wide-open space surrounded by the preserved battlefield landscape. By day, visitors can explore the property’s trails, enjoy a horseback ride, or learn about the history of the Battle of Trevilian Station. By evening, the atmosphere shifts.
As the sun begins to set, long shadows stretch across the fields and woodlands. In spring, dogwoods bloom throughout the landscape. Summer brings a canopy of deep green leaves, while fall transforms the battlefield with seasonal color. The same preserved scenery that tells the story of the Civil War becomes a peaceful backdrop for an overnight stay.
With few lights nearby, evenings often provide opportunities for stargazing and quiet reflection, listening to the sounds of nature.

Camping on Historic Ground
One of the most unique aspects of camping at Trevilian Station is the setting itself.
More than 15,000 Union and Confederate cavalrymen fought across this landscape during the Battle of Trevilian Station in June 1864, the largest all-cavalry battle of the Civil War. Today, much of that land remains protected and undeveloped, thanks to the Trevilian Battlefield Station Foundation, allowing visitors to experience a landscape that still feels remarkably connected to its past. Know Before You Camp
Trevilian Station offers a true primitive camping experience. Campers should arrive prepared with everything they need, including water and supplies. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available on site.
RVs and horse trailers are welcome, provided visitors bring everything needed for their stay. Because of the site’s primitive nature, shorter stays are generally the most practical option.
Campfires are permitted if visitors temporarily remove the sod beneath the fire, fully extinguish the fire when finished, and replace the sod before leaving. Please check online with local authorities for any fire restrictions before starting a fire.
Portable restrooms may be available, but visitors should plan as though no facilities are present.
Please note: Camping is permitted between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day. Overnight camping is not permitted outside of this time due to hunting access on the property.
